Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are involved on a voluntary basis as members of Boards of Directors of Not-For-Profit community organizations covering everything from minor sports, arts and culture and social service to name but a few. These individuals make valuable personal investments in time to help their organizations survive and succeed. And Board governance and effectiveness is seldom monitored or measured.
At its core, governance revolves around managing risks and opportunities. And success in managing risks and opportunities lies with effective interaction between board members. There are few measures in place to monitor the Boards effectiveness in an objective, responsible, non-threatening and productive manner.
At PMG, we have developed the Board of Director's Governance Monitor to provide volunteer boards an objective and scientific tool to evaluate the effectiveness of:
- The Board as a whole
- Individual board members in a non-threatening manner
- Chairperson
- Committee Chairpersons
- Individual committee performance
- Committee members performance; as well as,
- Performance Gaps and Skill Deficiencies
The use of the Governance Monitor will provide comfort and accountability to the organization's customers, members and funders that the Board's performance is being evaluated and used for continuous improvement.
